Blue Moon Saloon

The Blue Moon Saloon is a cement kit from Downtown Deco.  It ships as four walls with the carved brick molded in.   There are also some plastic door and window castings.  A styrene roof is included as is a laser cut stencil for painting the sign on the side of the building.  Some printed signs are included, but I’m not sure how they will hold up outside.

I’m NOT worried about the cement holding up outside!

I used “Liquid Nails” to assemble the wall pieces together, using a square to make sure that everything was aligned correctly.

Once it was assembled, I painted the building with a light gray primer.  This not only seals the cement and gives me a nice uniform surface, but it also acts as the mortar color.

Once the paint had dried, I got out my assorted reds and browns and started painting the individual bricks using a small brush.  I pour out the different colors into an artists palette that holds six colors and dip my brush into each and paint. I do not clean the brush at all while I’m doing this. As you can imagine, this is pretty mind-numbing, so I only do a bit at a time.

I do like the effect!

After that, it was a matter of putting on the door and window and painting the sign using the adhesive backed stencil. There were some paper signs included for the front window, but I wanted a different color for the shade, so I made my own signs with a Brother P-Touch printer.

The building was then lightly weathered and I applied a final coat of clear flat.

I made some additional signs with the Brother P-Touch, mounted them on plastic and put them on the side of the building.
